Vilafrancada was an uprising led by prince Miguel I of Portugal on 27 May 1823, it was fought to over throw the liberal regime established in the country by the Liberal Revolution of 1820. To commemorate the uprising a "Medal of Loyalty to King and Country" was instituted. The medal was intended to honour individuals who had assisted the King during the uprising.
