MDCCLV, female representation of Lisbon, seated on rock and resting upon an urn, amongst broken columns, lightning and flames beyond, rev. LISBONA on banner, English, Spanish and Dutch ships on the river Tejo conveying assistance, in the distance view of the city of Lisbon, 55mm, 61.20g (van Loon, Suppl. This medal was executed in Holland, and commemorates the memorable earthquake at Lisbon, 1st November 1755, in which not less than thirty thousand persons perished. As soon as the disaster was known in England George II sent notice to the Parliament, and at his request the sum of one hundred thousand pounds was voted for the relief of the suffers, and a large amount was immediately despatched in the form of grain, rice, and other commodities. Holland and Spain also contributed to the wants of the distressed capital.
