Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Orange Free State, Transvaal (4701 Pte. J. Monks. 8th Hussars.), edge bruise, very fine
William Monks was born in 1881 and was serving in the 1st (Volunteer) Battalion, Royal Lancaster Regiment upon his joining the 8th Hussars on 15 November 1899. He served in South Africa from 3 April 1901 (Queen's Medal & 4 clasps, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902).
Having joined the Reserve he was recalled to 'D' Section, 11th Hussars and thence proceeded to France with the 3rd Hussars on 9 September 1914 during the Great War (1914 Star Trio). He was discharged in February 1919, via Para 392 (XVIa) King's Regulations, with a Silver War Badge.
