1914-15 Star (J.21453. F. H. Hammon. A.B. R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (J.21453 F. H. Hammon. A.B. R.N.), mounted for wear, lacquered, contact marks and polishing, nearly very fine (3)

Frederick Henry Hammon was born at West Ham, London on 24 July 1897, and entered the Royal Navy on 25 November 1912 as Boy Class II. His first posting afloat was the depot ship H.M.S. Gibraltar on 18 June 1913 before joining H.M.S. Essex on 1 January 1914. On the outbreak of the Great War, he was still with this vessel as Boy Class I, reaching his majority on 26 February 1915 and being advanced Able Seaman on 26 August. This vessel spent much of the opening years of the war hunting German commerce raiders and patrolling British supply lanes.

Hammon left Essex on 2 February 1916, going ashore until May when he was posted to TB3, a first-class torpedo boat known as H.M.S. Firefly until 1907. He remained with this vessel until the end of the war, joining the seaplane tender Pegasus after her return from Archangel in December 1919. He was still with her during the Novorossiysk evacuation, supporting the White Russian Government attempting to escape the advancing Red forces.

After the war Hammon served with a number of warships including Yarmouth, Cyclops and Royal Sovereign. He finally joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 24 July 1927 after a career of over fifteen years.
