Albert Victor Walton was born at Bishop Auckland, Durham on 22 June 1897 and was a fitter by trade upon his joining the Royal Navy on 16 June 1913. During the Great War he served aboard Garland from 4 September 1915-31 June 1916, being present at the Battle of Jutland, with the 4th Destroyer Flotilla under the command of Lieutenant-Commander Reginald S. Goff.
Walton thence served aboard Peyton from 1 July 1916-10 August 1917. On 23 July, the destroyer, along with Narwhal, attacked the German submarine SM UB-23, which was ultimately interred on 29 July at Ferrol. He volunteered for the fledgling Submarine Service and served aboard C-14 from 5 March-26 August 1918 and also on K-22. Walton was shore demobilised in February 1920 and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve the next day.
