Charles Wesley Cox was born on 12 June 1890 at Rowley Regis, Worcestershire. Prior to his Naval service he was a Metal Turner. He enlisted into the Royal Navy on 6 December 1911 as part of the Armourer's Crew and served aboard Erin for the majority of his 'Great War' service. Erin was a Dreadnought battleship and played a minor role in the Battle of Jutland. He was awarded an L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1927 and was demobilised on 4 October 1938 but also saw Second World War service, finally being released on the 13 August 1945. His remarks section of his service papers show him being disrated and further deprived of 1 Good Conduct Badge and his L.S. & G.C. Medal as a result of being "Drunk on board; use insulting language; behave with contempt". This appears to has been reassessed on the 20 September 1946 and the medal returned.
