Hugh Kerr entered the war in France on 5 November 1914 with the 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots. Later transferred to the Highland Light Infantry while serving attached to the 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots with whom he was 'mentioned'. His final posting of the War was attached to the King's African Rifles, though he was afterwards to serve as Sub-Conductor of the Barrack Department.
