Cyril Baker was born on 22 October 1925, the son of Percy and Emmie Baker of Stafford. Enlisting with the Royal Navy he served on the River-class frigate H.M.S. Laganwith the convoy ON-202 in September 1942. The U-Boat U-270, which had been stalking the convoy, struck in the early hours of the morning of 20 September, firing a 'Gnat' torpedo which hit Lagan astern. Debris rained over the deck, causing numerous casualties, and although the enemy was unable to complete the kill thanks to the intervention of H.M.C.S. Gatineau, Lagan was seriously damaged. Towed back to Merseyside, it was soon discovered that she was a write-off and one officer and 28 ratings were either killed or missing after the attack, including Baker. He is commemorated upon the Portsmouth Naval Memorial; sold together with copied research including Commonwealth War Graves certificate and details of H.M.S. Lagan.
