William George Crews was born at Heavetree, Exeter in 1880 and enlisted with the Devonshire Regiment on 31 January 1898. Posted first to the 2nd Battalion at Aldershot he was to be reposted for service with the 1st Battalion during the Anglo-Boer War on 31 January 1900. Arriving in time for action in the Battle of Belfast he was to see the rest of his service with British Columns in the province of Natal.
Continuing to serve Crews was posted to India and promoted Corporal while there. Returning to Britain on 31 December 1908 he was appointed Lance Sergeant less than a year later on 16 July 1909 and finally advanced Sergeant on 10 June 1911. He remained with the Regiment, extending his service by one year on 3 April 1914 and as such was still with the Colours on the outbreak of the Great War.
Promoted Company Sergeant Major on 30 October 1915, Crews remained in this role throughout the war. He was discharged on 31 April 1919 at Exeter, giving his home address as Pinnhill Cottages, Exeter.
