William Newby was born in the summer of 1867 at Barnham Broom, Forehoe Norfolk, the son of William and Elizabeth Newby of Lankhead Farm, Barnham. The younger Newby was apprenticed to a shoemaker in his youth before attesting for service with the Norfolk Regiment on 5 April 1887 at Yarmouth. Posted to Gibraltar on 21 December 1887 within two years he was stationed with the Regiment at Umballa, India.

Returning to Britain on 25 January 1895 and transferring to the Army Reserve on 29 January, Newby was married on 9 December 1896. Settling into married life he was recalled to the colours on 24 December 1899, being posted to South Africa 14 March 1900. The Battalion saw action at Karee Siding on 29 March, they suffered 1 man killed and 22 men wounded, later serving through the guerrilla phase of the war.

Newby survived the fighting and returned to Britain on 1 August 1902, returning to the Reserve on 22 March 1903 and went to live at Town Green, Wymondham, finding employment there at the Post Office. He died in the early spring of 1920; sold together with copied research including census data, service papers and medal rolls.
