George Howard was born at Stradbrook, Harleston, Suffolk in April 1885, the son of Lucy Howard. Attesting at Colchester on 24 January 1880 as a Driver for the 5th Brigade Royal Artillery, he saw Home Service for his first two years with the military. During this time, he was four times reported for disciplinary infractions ranging from overstaying leave to drunkenness and being reported in a brothel. Joining the 3rd Brigade, Royal Artillery he was stationed with this unit when it was posted to join General Wolsey’s army in Egypt, arriving there on 9 August 1882.
Taking part in the British victory at Tel-El-Kebir he was awarded good conduct pay from 9 January 1883 while still in Egypt. Returning to Britain on 28 April 1883 Howard fell back into old habits and once again found himself the cause of regular disciplinary problems. At some stage he contracted hepatitis which eventually proved to be fatal, he died at Sheffield, Yorkshire on 11 May 1889 while still in service; sold together with copied research comprising census data, service papers and a typed biographical note.
