Henry Vine was born at Gaulton, Borchester, Dorset in 1849 and worked as an Plasterer before enlisting on 5 May 1868 with the 2/13th Light Infantry. Transferring to the Army Service Corps on 30 April 1872 he was promoted Corporal on 23 June of that year. Further advanced Sergeant on 5 December 1877, discharged to the Army Reserve in May 1879 Vine re-engaged the next day. Leaving for South Africa on 4 June 1879 for service in the Zulu War arriving as it was concluding, resulting in the award of the South Africa medal without a clasp. Vine was promoted Colour-Sergeant Class III not long later on 25 August 1879.
Appointed Staff Sergeant Class I on 11 February 1885 he arrived in Egypt only few days later on 18 February for service on the Suakin Expedition. With the end of the expedition Vine returned to Britain for the final time on 28 June 1885, being promoted Staff Sergeant-Major on 1 February 1899 he was finally discharged on 5 May 1899; sold together with copied medal rolls and service records.
