Thomas Birkby was born in Bingham, Nottingham and enlisted in Nottingham. He served in France from 11 September 1915 and was killed in action on 26 November 1917. Birkby is buried in the Roclincourt Military Cemetery. He was the son of Thomas and Ruth Ellen Birkby, of Water Lane, Radcliffe-on-Trent, Nottingham. His MIC lists him as Birkley whilst the CWGC has him as Birkby.
