Herbert Portswine was born at Croydon, Surrey on 19 August 1896 and worked as a Page Boy before enlisting with the Royal Navy as Boy Class II on 5 October 1911. By the outbreak of the Great War he was serving as Ordinary Seaman with H.M.S. St. Vincent. Leaving this vessel in 1915 Portswine removed to the battleship Hercules on 14 May 1915 and with them saw action at the Battle of Jutland. Here she was the 23rd Ship in the British line of battle, firing 98 shells from her 12-inch main guns. Portwine continued to serve as an Able Seaman, seeing post war service with the destroyer Royalist before being discharged on 4 June 1921; sold together with a copied service records.
Phillip John Farrell was born at Devonport, Devon on 15 June 1884 and is listed as having previously served as Stoker Class I with the Royal Navy. Joining at Sapphire II on 22 February 1909 as Stoker Class I, his first posting afloat was with the depot ship Blake. He saw mixed service prior to the war aboard a number of warships including Sentinel, Bellona and Cumberland. He served the bulk of the war with the light cruiser Carysfort, being promoted Stoker Petty Officer with her on 1 April 1916. Farrell continued to serve after the war being pensioned in March 1928 and joining the Royal Fleet Reserve the next day; sold together with copied service papers.
Thomas Cooper was born at Birmingham on 10 November 1879 and joined the Royal Navy on 3 August 1898 as Stoker Class II. Seeing pre-war service aboard a number of vessels including Minotaur, Bramble and Naiad he was Stoker Petty Officer by 1911. Returning ashore at this time to Pembroke II Cooper was re-classified Mechanic on 1 July 1913 and was with the battleship Monarch on the outbreak of hostilities. Joining Emperor of India for the first year of the war on 8 September 1915 later joining the company of Glasgow on 18 January 1916. After the end of hostilities he joined Woolston later being demobilised on 3 September 1920; sold together with a copied service record.
Samuel Cruikshank Robb was born at Liverpool on 20 October 1898, and entered the Royal Navy on 21 May 1917 as an Ordinary Seaman. He served ashore for the last two years of the Great War before joining the crew of Ark Royal during her service in the Black Sea in 1919. Here she served as a delivery mechanism for Royal Air Force seaplanes being sent to fly on the Caspian Sea. He was demobilised on 9 April 1919; sold together with a copied service record.
