Victory Medal 1914-19 (347875 E. H. Harnden. L. Ck. Mte. R.N.), polished, very fine

Ernest Harry Harnden was born at Chatham, Kent on 25 August 1889 and worked as a Blacksmith’s Mate prior to enlisting with the Royal Navy on 18 October 1907 as Probationary Cook’s Mate Class II. Having trained with Pembroke I he saw pre-war service with a number of vessels notably, Sappho, Edgar and Queen. With the outbreak of hostilities in 1914 Harnden was stationed with the destroyer H.M.S. Fervent, part of the Nore command as a Leading Cook’s Mate.

He remained with her until 29 May 1916 when he was posted ashore before joining the company of Victor on 24 June the next month. Remaining with her for the rest of the war Harnden was briefly posted to the Royal Air Force from 1 April 1918-4 October 1918.

Re-joining the Royal Navy in the final month of the war Harnden removed to H.M.S. Hannibal where he remained until August 1919, being promoted Lead Cook while there. He continued to serve after the war in this rank before being promoted Chief Petty Officer Cook in 1929 while with H.M.S. Ganges. Pensioned on 1 June 1930 he returned to service for the Second World War, serving ashore and being released on 13 December 1944.
