Albert Edward Sandford lived at Gravesend, Kent and was embodied for service with the Honourable Artillery Company (Infantry) on 1 September 1915. Posted to the 3rd Battalion he was transferred to the 1st Battalion on 2 April 1916. Sandford was twice wounded while serving with this unit, first in the right thigh on 29 August 1916, which saw him treated at the 1st Canadian General Hospital. Almost as soon as he had recovered from this injury he was back in the hospital with a barbed wire cut to his hand.

The next year Sandford sustained yet another wound this time the result of shrapnel to the right arm on 20 April 1917. This last wound was severe enough for him to be returned to England, via No. 30 Casualty Clearing Station, where he was depot posted and sent to the 1st (Reserve) Battalion. Demobilised on 19 February 1919; sold together with typed notes.
