(x) A 'Kut-Al-Amara P.O.W.s' 1914-15 Star awarded to Sepoy H. Gul, 1st Battalion, 67th Punjabis, who died in Ottoman hands on 24 July 1916

1914-15 Star (No. 1179 Sepoy Hamid Gul. 1/67/Punjabis.), sometime silvered and minor contact wear, overall very fine

Hamid Gul was the son of Abbas Khan of Jatu, Haripur, Hazara and served with the 1st Battalion 67th Punjabis in the early months of the Mesopotamian Campaign. They were present for the Battle of Shaiba, the action which prevented the Ottomans from retaking the city of Basra. Gul was one of 250 men of the regiment trapped at Kut-Al-Amara after the British repulse at Ctesiphon. When Kut fell on 29 April 1916 he was amongst the prisoners taken and led into appalling conditions. Despite the terrible treatment of the prisoners Gul managed to survive about three months before succumbing. He is remembered upon the Basra Memorial; sold together with typed research and a Commonwealth War Graves certificate.
