India General Service 1908-35, 2 clasps, Malabar 1921-22, Waziristan 1921-24 (4790 Nk. Parjit Pun, 2-8 G.R.), very fine
In October 1921, the 2nd Battalion, 8th Gurkha Rifles was mobilised, joined a punitive expedition to suppress a rebellion in Malabar and undertook a series of jungle operations. The most notable action of the campaign for the Battalion was an attack by about 2000 insurgents on a company post in November 1921. Assisted by followers and cooks the fanatical Moplahs were eventually repelled leaving over 200 dead at a cost of one British officer and three Gurkha soldiers killed and two Gurkha officers and 32 Gurkha other ranks and followers wounded. In January 1922, the leader of the insurrection surrendered to the 2nd Battalion and it left Malabar at the end of the month .
The 2nd Battalion moved to Waziristan for its next operational tour in January 1923. It formed part of the Razmak Field Force and was engaged in road protection duties with daily picqueting and occasional skirmishing with local tribesmen. On completion of the new road to Razmak, the Battalion was re-deployed to provide similar duties on the road under construction from Jandola to Wana. The Battalion was withdrawn from Waziristan in March 1924 and finally left the North West Frontier Province for Shillong in January 1926. It was not until 1938 that the 2nd Battalion returned to operational service in Waziristan .
