Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, Somaliland 1902-04 (B. Caufield, Sh.Cpl. 1 Cl., H.M.S. Naiad.), contact marks, very fine
Bartholomew Caufield was born at Plymouth, Devon on 2 December 1870 and enlisted at St. Vincent as Boy Class II on 23 July 1886. He saw service with a number of vessels, notably Boadicea and Penguin, reaching his majority aboard the latter on 2 December 1888. Further service followed with Iron Duke and Galetia amongst others and Caufield was promoted Ship's Corporal while ashore at St. Vincent on 30 April 1898. Posted aboard H.M.S. Naiad he served there for the duration of the Somaliland Campaign.
After further service he was discharged on 30 November 1910 at Victory I. Joining the Royal Naval Reserve on 9 September 1911 Caufield was mobilised for service at Victory I with the rank of Petty Officer on 2 August 1914. He served ashore for a brief period but was demobilised again on 19 October 1914; sold together with typed research as well as copied research comprising medal rolls, service papers and an extract from World Warships in Review 1860-1906.
