Queen's Sudan 1896-98 (3222. Pte J. G. Robinson. 1/Lin: R.), pitting, minor edge wear, very fine

Provenance:
Spink 12 March 1996.

James George Robinson was born at London in 1878 and attested for the Lincolnshire Regiment with the rank of Boy while still underage on 11 August 1892. His attestation lists him as a musician and notes that he had been living at St. George's School, Plaistow. Promoted Private upon reaching manhood while he was stationed in Malta on 11 February 1896.

Posted to Egypt on 4 February 1897, the 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment was part of the force gathered to take part in the Nile Expedition. They were part of Kitchener's army during the fierce battle of the Atbara (Medal and Clasp) as part of Major-General Gatacre's British Brigade. They formed the second wave of the attack after the Cameron Highlanders but heavy resistance at the zeriba soon saw them engaged in savage hand to hand fighting.

Robinson survived the fighting and with the rest of the Battalion was posted to India on 8 November 1898. While here he was appointed Bandsman on 13 October 1899 and further promoted Lance Corporal on 17 September 1900. Robinson was invalided from service while still in India on 26 May 1903; sold together with copied research comprising service papers, medal rolls and a former auction listing.
