India General Service 1895-1908, 1 clasp, Relief of Chitral 1895 (4338 Pte A. Burgess 1st Bn Bedford Regt), suspension somewhat loose, otherwise good very fine
Alfred Burgess was born at Hamel Hampstead, Hertford, in 1874. Enlisting with the Bedford Regiment on 31 December 1892, he was posted to the 2nd Battalion for home service. Remaining in Britain for the year of 1893 Burgess was posted the 1st Battalion for service in India the next year on 27 September 1894.
The next year this Battalion formed part of General Low's relief expedition, which marched on the beleaguered Fort of Chitral on the North West Frontier. They were in on the action during the heavy fighting to force the Malakand Pass from a large force of local tribesman which was only accomplished after five hours of continual fighting.
Remaining in India after the campaign Burgess was part of the garrison of Ferozepore in 1898. He began to complain of a number of medical issues as a result of the posting and was invalided back to Britain on 5 September 1898. Oddly he remained in service until 1900 before being discharged as medically unfit; sold together with copied research including a medal roll and service papers.
