Roman Republic, A Selection of Denarii (5): i) AR Denarius, 95 BC issued by L Caecilius Metellus, A ALB S F L METEL, Laureate head of Apollo right, star below, rev Rome seated left on pile of shields holding swird in left hand and spear in right hand, crowned from behind by Victory, ROMA in exergue, 3.86g (RRC 335/1b), residually lustrous, good detail although some softening in places, slightly off-centred reverse strike, very fine; ii) AR Denarius, 89 BC issued by L. Titurius Sabinus, SABIN, bearded head of king Tatius right, rev. L TITVRI, Victory in biga right, holding reigns in left hand and wreath in right, control mark in exergue, 3.79g (RRC 344/3), bright, elongated flan, detailed reverse, very fine; iii) AR Denarius, 83 BC issued by C. Norbanus, C NORBANUS, diademed head of Venus right with control mark behind, rev. Prow stem, fasces with axe, caduceus and corn ears, 3.64g (RRC 357/1b), well centred, good detail with some softening, good very fine; iv) AR Denarius, 76 BC issued by Cn. Cornelius Lentulus Marcellinus, GPR, bust of Genius populi Romani right, draped and hair tied with band, sceptre over shoulder, rev. LENT CVR X F, sceptre with wreath, globe and rudder, 3.98g (RRC 393/1b), toned with some softening, slightly off-centred strike, very fine; v) AR Denarius, 55 BC issued by P. Fonteius Capito, P FONTEIVS P F CAPITO III VIR, Bust of mars right, helmeted and draped with trophy over shoulder, rev. MN FONT TR MIL, horseman right holding reigns in left and and thrusting spear at warrior below as the warrior drives sword through unarmed captive, 3.75g (RRC 429/1), an unusually fine example, slightly off centred-strike, finely detailed, extremely fine(5)
