Frederick John Poole was born at Glamorgan on 14 March 1898, the son of Thomas and Ada Poole. In the early years of the war he studied at the University of Wales and a number of other institutions with the goal of becoming a teacher. Enlisting on 7 June 1917 he entered the war on 3 October 1917 with 12th Battalion, South Wales Borderers.
During the fighting at Bourlon Wood during the Cambrai Operations on 23 November 1917 Poole was shot in the left knee, leaving him unable to properly walk. As a result he was sent to the Labour Corps and discharged on 20 June 1918. After the war he continued his studies and fulfilled his goal of teaching. He died in Glamorgan in 1970; sold together with two silver war badges both correctly numbered to the recipient, two dogs tags, photographs and a number of letters and certificates relating to his education and post-war career including the discharge papers of his son Gunner C. G. Poole along with copied research including census data, discharge papers and medical records as well as an extract from the History of the South Wales Borderers, M.I.C. and medal rolls.
Francis George Poole more commonly called 'Frank' was born in 1895, at Glamorgan, the son of Thomas and Ada Poole. Enlisting with the Gloucestershire Regiment at Pentre, Glamorgan, Poole entered the war in France on 1 January 1915 but was wounded on 9 May with 1st Battalion which saw heavy fighting on the Rue de Bois. Returning to France after his recovery he joined the 8th Battalion, this unit saw action for the first time at the Battle of Loos from 25 September 1915 and later during the Somme Offensive.
One of the Regiments deployed on the First Day they fought at Albert and High Wood in July 1916. Poole was killed on 23 July when the Battalion advanced on Pozieres only to be halted by machine gun fire. He is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial; sold together original family photographs as well as copied research including extracts from the Gloucestershire Regiment History, M.I.C., medal rolls and a family tree along with typed extracts from the Rhondda Leader.
