Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (B/164 Corpl. J. Ewins. 66th Foot), good very fine
James Ewins crossed the Afghan frontier in February, 1880 and would have surely been present at the disastrous Battle of Maiwand, 27 July 1880, in which the Regiment suffered 10 officers and 275 other ranks killed, and 2 officers and 30 other ranks wounded, out of a total force of 20 officers and 469 other ranks.
Ewins himself did not survive the campaign and died at Kandahar on 11 August 1880, although one roll (WO100/52) lists him as killed at Maiwand.
