King Khama
1885-1895 group of documents and letters written to Sidney Shippard, Administrator, W.H. Surmon, Assistant Commissioner, regarding routine government, military and political business. Eight are signed by King Khama, Chief of the Bamangwato people, two by Sechele, Chief of the Bakwena, who writes in November 1885 that "I hear from travellers and others that the Queen of England has taken over the territory of the Batlapin and the Baralong as far as the Molopo River...", mentioning Sir C. Warren; (the letter with an English translation); letter from O/C. Crocodile River Station re a court case; O/C BBP with circular rubber cachet re a dispute betweeen Khama and Silika; Khama denying he has"detained any poles" in Sechele country; mention of "guns and ammunition for Chief Lobengula"; Khama writes of a dispute of stolen property involving the ZAR; a letter signed by J.S. Moffat regarding a land dispute; and a further sworn deposition regarding a cattle dispute signed jointly by Khama and Moffat. With a printed licence for removing gunpowder, an army permit signed by J.S. Moffat, and a receipt raising a charge for a transport contract to the Imperial Govt for a transport contract from Tati to Buluwayo (1894). (40)
