Sikh Empire, Ranjit Singh (VS 1856-96; 1799-1839), Gobindshahi Rupee, Kashmir, probably VS 1879 (date off flan), Devanagari 'har' within legend, rev. leaf below date (Herrli 06.06.04; KM 46.6), a very scarce variant, condition not even across flan, but overall good very fine

Although the date is not visible on this particular coin it has been attributed to VS 1879 as this is the only date known to feature 'har' on the obverse. The presence of this Devanagari legend had previously been attributed to the Sikh governor of Kashmir, Hari Singh Nalwa, due to his name. Now it is thought the 'har' is for 'hari' ie. God.
