Lot: 358

Sikh Empire, Ranjit Singh (VS 1856-96; 1799-1839), Nanakshahi Rupees (2), Amritsar, fixed year VS 1885 / 95, different types, the first with ten distinct shroff marks on edge, but 1885 off flan, the second with four different shroff marks (Herrli 01.11.04; Gurprit Singh 01.57.01 & 01.58.01; KM 22.1), the first with as test punch either side, both extremely fine (2)

The shroff marks on the edges of these coins are interesting in their own right. They show that the coins have passed through many hands and been tested and verified by different authorities. For some series of coins these marks are becoming the subject of research in their own right, and it cannot be long before the marks on Sikh coins come under similar scrutiny.
