'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He worked without ceasing for five days and nights under heavy machine-gun and shell fire, relaying and maintaining telephone wires, until brought in in a delirious condition. His disregard of personal safety contributed largely to the successful maintenance of communications, and his example had a fine effect on the men under him.'
