A period copy Victoria Cross and re-engraved Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. pair purportedly worn by Quartermaster G. Hinckley, Royal Navy
Victoria Cross, copy, the reverse of the suspension bar engraved 'George Hinckley A.B. Royal Navy' and the reverse centre engraved '6. Feb. 1863.', with top riband buckle and original blue Naval riband; Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., wide suspension (G. Hinckley. Ship's Corpl. H.M.S. Cambridge. 27 Yrs.), re-engraved naming, very fine (2)
Purchased in Sweden in 2010. An old typed note and black and white photograph showing the naming states:
'...The Victoria Cross exhibited was a replacement medal obtaine by Hinckley when he sold his original, having fallen upon hard times.'
V.C. London Gazette 6 February 1863:
'For volunteering while under the East Gate of the city of Fung-Wha, to carry to a joss house, a hundred and fifty yards distant, under a heavy and continuous fire of musketry, gingalls and stink-pots, Mr Coker, Master's Assistant of the "Sphinx", who had been wounded in the advance to the gate; in which object Hinckley succeeded. On his return to the gate, under a similar fire, he again volunteered and succeeded in carrying to the joss-house Mr Bremer, an officer of Ward's force, who had also been wounded in the advance on the gate; and he again returned to his post under the gate.'
