Three: Private A. E. Rowell, 43rd (Cameron Highlanders of Canada) Canadian Infantry who was killed in action on 27 August 1918

Albert Edward Rowell was born at Doddington, Cumberland on 31 December 1896, the son of Sarah Rowell. Immigrating to Canada as a young man Rowell worked as a Farmer and served with the 79th (Cameron Highlanders of Canada) Battalion of the Militia. Joining the 43rd (Cameron Highlanders of Canada), Canadian Infantry on 18 December 1916 he entered the war in France with this Battalion. The 43rd (Cameron Highlanders of Canada), Canadian Infantry saw heavy action throughout the war notably being present at Hill 70 during the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Rowell's service records state that he was killed:

'While his Battalion was taking up new positions in the vicinity of Vis-En-Artois on the night of August 27th 1918, he was killed by an enemy shell'

Buried first in an 'isolated grave, 4 miles North East of Croisilles' he was exhumed and reburied at Vis-En-Artois British Cemetery, Haucourt; sold together copied research including service papers, war diary entries and Commonwealth War Graves details as well as an original archive comprising:

A newspaper cutting.

ii)
A cap badge and coronation medal.

iii)
A broach engraved with the word 'VIMY', in fitted box on issue.

iv)
An O.H.M.S. document tube containing named memorial scroll and condolence slip.

v)
Two portrait photographs and a group photograph as well as an image of the recipient's grave.

vi)
Correspondence with the War Graves Committee and Overseas Military Forces of Canada.

C.E.F. Death Certificate.
