William Ginman was commissioned Sub-Lieutenant on 19 February 1906 and promoted Lieutenant on 24 December 1907. He was part of Number 9 Company under Lieutenant Viscount Curzon with the unit composed of 92 men. Ginman was one of ten Officers and 126 men invited to form the escort for the Prince of Wales on his visit to Canada. He was one of only two officer's to be selected from the London Division as having made sufficient progress to attend.
Appointed to the Trade Division of the War Staff on 7 August 1914 he was promoted Lieutenant Commander on 24 December 1915. Recommended for promotion in October 1917 with a comment in his records that he was 'Zealous & hardworking. Keen on improving his knowledge in Naval matters', Ginman was promoted Acting Commander on 31 March 1918. Placed on Special Service with the Appointments Department of the Ministry of Labour on 11 December 1918 he was allowed to retain the rank of Commander beyond his war service. Demobilised on 1 September 1919, again retaining his acting rank. Awarded the R.N.V.R. decoration in May 1922 he retired in June of that year; sold together with typed research and scanned extracts from London's Navy, A story of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
