James Melrose was born at Lambeth, Surrey in 1875. He attested with the Durham Light Infantry on 14 July 1916 and served with the 2/9th Battalion. Melrose entered the war at Salonica on 6 November 1916 and served there for the rest of the war, he was one of many to catch Malaria in the squalid conditions being admitted to the 28th General Hospital on 11 April 1918. Recovering, Melrose continued to serve until the end of the war, returning to Britain on 6 April 1919. His records note that his civilian employment was as a barber and that Melrose had continued in this role, becoming the regimental barber during his time in Greece. He was demobilised on 5 May 1919; sold together with copied M.I.C.
