Four: Serjeant A. Kington, 17th (1st Football), Middlesex Regiment, who was killed in action at Redan Ridge on 13 November 1916

Arthur Kington was born at Ham, Kent in 1880, the son of Edward and Louisa Kington of 1 Mosley Road, Greenwich. His father worked as Foreman of a coal yard at the Royal Arsenal with two of his children working beneath him as machinists. Kington was married at Greenwich Registry Office in 1898 to Mary Kate Oakewell. Prior to enlisting Kington worked as a boiler stoker at a gas works whilst living at 18A Fairthorne Road, Charlton, Greenwich.

Attesting with the Middlesex Regiment at Deptford on 8 February 1915 he was posted to 17th (1st Football) Battalion, appointed Lance Corporal on 3 May and promoted Sergeant on 3 July. Entering the war in France on 17 November 1915 during the build-up of forces for the Battle of the Somme. The Battalion joined the fighting between Carnoy and Montauban on 25 July 1916 before moving to Delville Wood, where on 28 July Kington was wounded in the back.

Recovering he re-joined the Battalion on 14 October and was present on 13 November for the attack on Reden Ridge, part of the opening phase of the Battle of Acre. Kington was listed as missing during the attack and was confirmed dead on 28 May 1917. He is buried at Serre Road Cemetery No.1; sold together with copied Commonwealth War Graves details and recruitment posters.
