A Very Rare Elizabethan Warrant to Pay a Royal Messenger
1565 (18 March) warrant addressed to "Mr. Kyllegrewe one of the IIIJ Tellers of the Queen's Receipt" to pay a messenger of the Queen: "you shall deliver unto Richarde Mynsterlee one of the messengers for his Rydinge charges as appereth bt his bills the some of nyne pounds four shillings and eight pennce...". Signed "Winchester" (Lord High Treasurer) and "Ry. Sakevyle" (Under Treasurer). Some reinforcements along the left-hand edge otherwise fine and rare.

Notes: At this time, royal mail was sent privately via household employed messengers, Richard Mynsterlee being one such messenger.
