(x) From the Mayflower Collection
An Exceptionally Rare Document from the Court of Queen Mary I
1557 (21 Dec.) document headed "By The Queen" though unsigned from John Newdegate at St. James to John Symondes of Middlesex regarding the forced repayment of a loan of £10. Some minor soiling as to be expected with a few splits and reinforcements along folds otherwise fine and complete with address panel on reverse endorsed "Letter of Queen Mary". Remnants at the lower left of the document suggest a wafer seal which would likely have acted as the royal signature. A very rare royal document from this short reign, and in a most unusual format.

Notes: Written just under a year before Queen Mary's death, it is possible that this document was left unsigned owing to her illness.
