The Remarkable "Ellerby Area" Hoard of English Gold Coins (1610-1727) | James I (1603-1625), Third Coinage, Crown Gold Issues [.917 Fine], "Pattern" Laurel, 18 June 1624 - 7 July 1625, Tower, (m.m.) • IACOBVS • D • G • MAG • BRI • FRA • ET • HI • REX • fifth laureate, draped and cuirassed bust left "of curious style", ties frame larger XX behind, rev. FACIA | M EOS IN | GENTEM | VNAM (m.m.), no stops, long cross fleury over small crowned square-topped Royal shield with pointed base, bird-headed harp with six strings, 7.83g, 5h, m.m. trefoil [46] (PAS: YORYM-18E848 = BM 2019 T668/20 this coin; Lingford II, 1091; Schneider II, 88 same dies; North 2115 [ER]; Spink 2639), some metal flawing on portrait and the usual die cudding by value, otherwise surprisingly lightweight even with shortness of flan, struck details a pleasing very fine, of the highest rarity, a new addition to a corpus posited at fewer than ten specimens extant, with NGC 'Ellerby' Certification (#6380983-020)
