(x) New Zealand
The Sideface Issues
1882-1900 Second Issue
1895-1900 Perforated 11
variety single-lined Watermark Sideways

½d black, 1d rose (faults), and 2d lilac (repaired tear at left), all with single-lined NZ and Star watermark sideways. The circumstances in which these 'abnormals' were produced are not known, but the three stamps comprise a set which is New Zealand's rarest and which cannot be duplicated, since only one example each is known of both the ½d and the 2d. It was originally put together by Dr Ken McNaught RDP, and has never previously been offered for public sale. The set was discussed in The New Zealand Stamp Collector, March 2010.
The halfpenny value was discovered about a century ago and reported in the first volume of The Postage Stamps of New Zealand. Its unique nature was confirmed in Volume II of that handbook, and it remains the only known copy. It has previously been in the collections of G.W. Sides, J. Lex Robb, and K.J. McNaught.
Four copies of the one penny value were found by Dr McNaught, all used at Gisborne in September 1899, and reported in Volume II, p. 294. There may now be about six known copies in all.
The 2d value was reported in Volume IV, p. 45. No further example has since been found. S.G. 236ba, 237ca, 238ba, £8,000; CP D1e(T), D2p(S), D3k(Y), $24,000. R.P.S.N.Z. Certificates for the halfpenny and twopenny
