Essays, Proofs and Reprints
½a. vermillion '9½ arches' essay block of six (3x2) [57-59 / 65-67], good margins all round, from the left of the sheet with part inscription "stage stamps pr", faint bends in the margin only and tiny nick in margin at top otherwise particularly fine and exhibiting beautiful variety in shade, among the largest multiples remaining. S.G. 1, £21,000+

Notes: As the 'Scinde Dawk' Wax seals proved to be so fragile and thus withdrawn from use in 1854, designs were drawn up and proofs made for a postage stamp more akin to that already in use in Britain and the Commonwealth.

The ½a., 1a. and 4a. were lithographed in Calcutta at the office of the Surveyor-General. The 9½ arches essays were prepared for use with a stock sent to Bombay, but never officially issued.
