1913 eleven handpainted essays submitted for the new Definitive Union postage stamps, comprising ½d., 1d., 2d., 2½d., 3d., 4d., 6d., 1/-, 2/6d., 5/- and 10/- each executed in various colours on pieces with simulated perforations on Cordall's Bristol Board (157x194mm.), opposite each is a stamp-size black and white print of the design and below it a typed note of the features in the design, all affixed on brown paper folder with typed "Competitive Designs for New Union Postage Stamp" and "Postmaster-General of the Union of South Africa, Cape Town." and with manuscript "A.F.G. Forbes" and "43", presumably the designer and entry number. An important, unique and highly attractive set that would hugely enhance a collection of this era. Photo
