1848 (18 June) entire letter to Ludlow "Per the Barque 'Jane Cain'" boldly marked "Registered" and "3" in red ink, a fair strike of crowned "ship letter/melbourne" despatch dated oval in red and rated "1/2", the reverse with straight-line "ship-letter" in black over London transit c.d.s. (11.12); part of the top flap is missing and there is a horizontal filing crease which does not detract from this important cover. This is the earliest known registered cover from Port Phillip District (Victoria)
