This letter had a rather tortuous journey to England; arriving in Sydney on 13th April, it had missed the sailing of the 'Columbian' which sailed on the 11th. The next vessel was the 'Oneida but due to engine problems it was not entrusted with registered mail, the next sailing was not until 25th May on the 'Simla'. On arrival at Alexandria there was neither an E.& O. or P.& O. vessle available thus the British Consul chartered the sailing ship 'Scamander' to carry the British mail to Liverpool via Malta. Although a non-contract sailing the mail was accepted as from the Australia packet
