1849 (30 May) wrapper front to Stratford, Essex "pr Royal Saxon via India" bearing a good strike of unframed "registered/Sydney" handstamp (White type R1) in red with good strike of "paid ship letter/sydney" oval datestamp in red with "3/1" rate mark part arrival datestamp on the reverse (only top flap and one side flap remain). A little soiled but a good example of this registration marking

6d. registration paid in cash, 3/1d. for double ship letter rate via India and Marseilles of 2/7d. plus 6d. registration

It is interesting to note that the 'Royal Saxon' was a merchant ship famous for trying to break the British blocade of Canton, this action being a contributing factor for the start of the first Opium War
