1856 (6 Nov.) Nicholson envelope to Melbourne bearing 1847-54 Embossed 1/- pale green, die 2 (6, cut to shape) plus 1855-57 6d. deep lilac (trimmed wing margin) cancelled by "877" numerals with Whitehaven despatch c.d.s. alongside, there is also a printed label "registered letter." in red (thought only to have been used in Whitehaven), the reverse bears London transit and "ship letter/melbourne" arrival dated oval (7.1). There are some peripheral wrinkles and faults, generally clean.

This envelope has created much interest in the past, each of the 1/- green stamps are the same size and it has been conjectured that these were cut from the sheet with a die cutter. Little is known of this experimental form of separation.
