Mail from United Kingdom During the American Civil War
1864 (2 Sept.) envelope to South Lancaster bearing 1862-64 6d. lilac plate 4 and 1/- green (creased) cancelled by Irish "186" numerals with a good strike of "dublin/registered/plo" c.d.s. in red, a very good strike of the sans-serif crown/"registered" in black" and "boston br pkt/paid" c.d.s. (16.9). A fine and appealing cover.


The black Crown Registered handstamp was applied during sorting on the transatlantic mail boat

With enclosure (from an earlier correspondence) which includes, "...in this time of War and Slaughter - and no person can form an opinion how and where it will end because the North are fighting for Dominion - to Bully, Coerce - and Tyranise over eight million of their country men who wish to be free and to Govern themselves. President Lincoln declares it is not to put down slavery but to crush the South. I think the North will succeed but there will never be a friendly union again"
