Mail from United Kingdom During the American Civil War
1862 (20 May) wrapper to Philadelphia "Via Liverpool to go by Cunard Mail Steamer" bearing 1855-57 6d. lilac and 1/- green (4, one trimmed wing margin) tied by Jersey "409" duplex bearing a good strike of the very scarce Jersey crown/"registered" (sans serif letter) in a brownish colour, plus London small crown/"registered" and the standard-type London registered dated oval (22.5) code "AN", some rate marks including handstruck "96" and manuscript "26", there are also faint strikes of "paid" and Pkt c.d.s. in the upper right corner, the reverse with Liverpool transit (22.5). An attractive and important cover bearing the Jersey registration handstamp

A quadruple rate cover paying postage 4/- and registration 6d. The 96c. represents four times the 24c. inland postage, the 26 manuscript is the credit to U.S.


The second type of Jersey crown Registered handstamp was introduced on 29 December 1858
