1858 (16 Sept.) stampless envelope to the Crown Lands Department, Toronto with manuscript "3" overstruck by a fine strike of "free" with "registered" alongside, a fine strike of Bristol despatch c.d.s. and various changes to the registration number; the reverse with Aylmer (16.9) in red, part City of Ottawa (17.9) c.d.s. (part removed along with the wax seal) and Toronto arrival (18.9). The Registered handstamp indicates that 1d. was paid for registration (charged even if the postage was free). Registered Free covers are rare, this being a particularly fine example

The italicised Registered handstamp represents the 1d. fee paid, it is found used only at a few small offices in Lower Canada including Buckingham, Eaton, Rawdon and Terrebonne as well as Bristol
