1856 (4 Mar.) neat envelope to La Rochelle, France bearing an array of transit marks including straight-line "paid" and "registered" in red plus "chargé" in black, Quebec despatch c.d.s., "PD" in oval, "2/7" and "3/2" rate marks, two London Paid datestamps (27.3) with the Foreign Branch tall crown/"registered" and Calais transit, various French transit marks on the reverse including La Rochelle arrival and four small marks where the French registration seals have been removed. This is the first recored letter from Canada to France after the Cunard Mail Service was restored. An important cover which is full of character

This double rate letter (½oz.) pays BNA internal postage 4d., U.S. transit 2d., U.K. sea mail and internal transit 1/8d. and French internal transit 5d.; making a total of 2/7d. (3/2d. currency). There is no evidence that either British or French post collected registration charges, despite each applying their registration mark.
