1863 (22 Oct.) entire letter to Gothenburg, Sweden "via Hull" bearing 1862-64 9d. straw, CE-DE vertical pair with wing margin well tied by "761" numeral with Sunderland despatch c.d.s. alongside, marked "Registered" in red ink plus "8" in the same ink, with larger crown/"registered" and the standard-type London registered dated oval code "BH", no other postal markings. A fine example of this scarce franking

Pays postage 1/- (under ½oz.) and 6d. registration. The Swedish Post Office ran a weekly packet service to Gothenburg from the East Coast ports of Grimsby (1854-58) and Hull (1840-42, 1859-79) with the mails made up in London. Of the 1/- postage rate, 4d. went to the U.K. and 8d. to Sweden (the "8" marking)
