                        The Second Opium War
Whampoa Postal Agency
1858 (10 Apr.) envelope to New York from Wetmore, Williams & Co (boxed handstamp in red on the reverse), rated "2/8" and with New York handstruck "33" with Br. Pkt arrival c.d.s. (17.6) in black, the reverse, along with the scarce company handstamp, Hong Kong type 9 c.d.s. (10.4) and London transit (3.7). Some light soiling but a good cover
The blockade of Canton was lifted on 10th February 1858, after this private steamers began to carry mail on a limited service schedule. This cover was delivered to Hong Kong some three days before the P&O sailing, indicating that it originated outside of Hong Kong, i.e. Canton or Whampoa (this case). This is an early cover from Whampoa after the reopening of the Canton postal service
