Opium Clipper Ships
Red Rover: 1832 (7 Nov.) outer wrapper addressed to Joze Jorge Ribeiro in Calcutta and carried "per Red Rover" bearing, on the flap, Calcutta arrival (4 Dec.) and boxed tax mark "InLd.Ptg =3/Ship Do. 3/T As.6" in black and details written by the recipient written neatly on the flap. Also 1832 (4 Nov.) wrapper to the same addressee, who was Captain of the Navio Amalia and carried "pr Red Rover", without any postal markings and with the arrival notation on flap along with additional transport notes mentioning the barque 'Lord Amherst'. A good pair of covers. (2)

Red Rover was the first of the British opium clippers, built in 1829. A 254-ton clipper, built, owned, and operated by Captain William Clifton. Claimed to be one of the fastest opium clippers running between Calcutta and Lintin in the 1830s. Jardine, Matheson & Co. held shares in the ship beginning in 1832, later becoming her full owner.
